FC Paed(SA) & DCH(SA) OVERVIEW

The FC Paed(SA) examination comprises Part I and Part II. This qualification forms part of a process to accredit medical practitioners as specialists in Paediatrics and Child Health.

FC Paed(SA) PART I EXAM:

  • A written examination comprising TWO papers each containing multiple choice questions (MCQs)
  • Each MCQ paper will have 75 questions.
  • Each MCQ paper will be of 3 hours duration.
  • A single mark will be awarded for the 150 MCQs combined.
  • All questions will be single best response (A-type) MCQs.
  • The MCQ papers will be published in English only
  • The papers will cover applied basic clinical sciences, including anatomy, embryology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, genetics, epidemiology, biostatistics, evidence-based medicine, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and the diagnosis and principles of management of common paediatric conditions

The pass mark for the test will be determined using Cohen’s method of standard setting. Using this method the pass mark is determined as a percentage, eg 65% of the 95th percentile of the scores achieved by candidates sitting the examination. Candidates are therefore encouraged to answer ALL ITEMS in the test.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A candidate may be admitted to Part I/Primary of the examination having a qualification to practice medicine
  • Provide proof of successful completion of the Knowledge Hub’s online IMCI course through submission of a Certificate of Achievement

DCH(SA) Examination: 

A written examination comprising TWO papers each containing multiple choice questions (MCQs) and an objective structured clinical examination.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 6 months of full-time Paediatric training (which may include four months of internship training) at any South African hospital accredited for internship training by the HPCSA or CMSA-approved hospital
